I have no idea when my meditation journey began, I first recognized it with my yoga practice, but now that I look back, perhaps I’ve been meditating all of my life and yoga brought it to the forefront. Who knows? I know one thing. It kicks ass!

So what’s the big deal with quieting your mind? Think about it. In this crazy world there is nothing better than a little peace and quiet. Here are some great reasons to meditate everyday.

Meditation Reduces Stress-I can write a whole article on this, and I will!

Stress is a major cause of sickness and disease today. Meditation can actually make structural changes to the brain. When this happens, it improves our psychological well being and reduces stress. Boom! A healthier and happier you.

It Strengthens the Immune System-Relaxation has shown to boost the immune system. The heart slows and blood circulation flows freely to the body’s tissues, feeding it with nutrients and oxygen which feed our cells and strengthens us against sickness and disease.

It makes you happy-When are you stressed and happy? Ummm….never. By calming the mind and body, we learn to balance our emotions. We let go of the past and quit worrying about the future. We learn to live and experience the present moment which takes us to a happier place.

It improves creativity and focus-Meditation can help you build a “Super Mind”! It increases mental strength and focus, so you can ignore distractions. You will have better cognitive skills and creative thinking. It helps you process information so you can make decisions and solve problems. It aids in memory retention. Who wouldn’t want a super mind?

It increases energy-When we let go of stress and focus on the present, our mood improves, we are happier and healthier which clears our mind and relaxes our body. We feel good and energy improves.

A meditation practice may just be your path to a healthier you! You can find thousands of meditations online at little or no cost and it only takes a few minutes a day.

So check it out, google meditation and start your journey, because OM is where the heart is.

It Matters where you get that bird

The holidays are here and many of us are planning magnificent feasts for our families and friends. As we plan the menu it’s important that the centerpiece, the turkey is obtained from the right sources.  What do I mean by this? It matters where you get that bird! It matters for taste, your health and our planet.  Here are a few things to consider when buying your holiday turkey.

Naturally raised turkey’s are healthier for us -A turkey raised on a farm is in it’s natural environment, allowing it to roam freely and eat the grass and grubs it was meant to eat instead of unnatural grains filled with antibiotics and hormones which ultimately end up on our plates.

They taste better-Never tried an organic farm fresh turkey?  You don’t know what you’re missing.

Buy local-Support your local farmer and get a natural ethically raised turkey.

Help the environment-Factory farms harm our environment and are unsustainable.

Factory farms are unethical-Ask yourself; what would I rather eat? A turkey that spent it’s life in deplorable conditions where the best day of it’s life was the day it died? Or a turkey that was raised in a humane natural environment and given the life it deserves? I think you know the answer.

Choose a Heritage Turkey-There is a movement to bring back older varieties of turkey’s that were once native to the United States. These birds are naturally bred and genetically diverse thus ensuring survival of the species.  They are also superior in taste to factory farmed birds.

Thanksgiving is a time to be thankful for all that the year has brought us and the bounty before us.  Let’s make sure that we’re thanking the local farmers who work so hard to bring us healthy sustainable food.

As men age a variety of health challenges can arise that can leave us zapped of energy and vitality. We’ve always been looked upon as the providers and protectors so when health problems challenge us we tend to push them aside for more seemingly important matters. But how important is a healthy mind and body? It’s critical. Your body is a miraculous work of art. It can think, process food, create new cells, walk and take in just enough life-giving oxygen, all at the same time. Taking care of such a precious commodity ought to be a priority. Living a new, healthy lifestyle of proper food, exercise and enough sleep can be daunting. Ask yourself; how do I want to live my life as I age? Of course none of us want to be old and sick, but many times that’s the option we leave ourselves by ignoring signs of poor health.

It doesn’t have to be that way.

I’ve been there. At the age of 40, even though I was fit and I thought that I was living a healthy lifestyle, I was diagnosed with high cholesterol and inflammation of the arteries. The silent killer for men my age. I was shocked but determined to make positive changes to my health. Through nutrition, exercise and education, I was able to reverse my condition and do it without dangerous medications and treatments. Today, at the age of 53, I’m happy and healthy and looking forward to a long life. All because of taking action to get my health back.
